The way in which clans relate to each other according to dual-istic opposition is a function of the segmentary system, which always seeks to bring more and more groups together. Actual coalitions never strictly follow this system. Intervening levels are sometimes skipped, as when, say, the Āl Fuhaidah and the Āl Jaber want to interact, for whatever reasons, they claim that they are the Āl Sa’id, their closest common ancestor, without necessarily implicating all the other groups which also claim Sa’id as an ancestor, although the other groups could very easily be brought into such a coalition simply through an appeal to the duties of all the descendants of a given ancestor to stand together. Such is the process of segmentation.
